Choosing to parent alone is not a fallback. For a large number of people it is the considered decision, taken after concluding that waiting for a partner would mean waiting past the point where a child is possible.

The practical shape of it

One income, one set of hands, and no one to take the night shift. That is the honest description. What makes it work is rarely heroism; it is infrastructure — family nearby, friends who show up, an employer who is flexible, and money planned for rather than hoped for.

The legal position

In most cases simpler than a shared arrangement: one legal parent, no custody to divide. The complexity comes from the donor route. A clinic donor is designed out of the picture. A known donor is not automatically out of it, and in some circumstances can acquire a legal relationship with the child that you did not plan for.

If you are going the known-donor route as a solo parent, this is the single most important thing to take advice on before conceiving rather than after.

What to arrange that couples do not have to

Guardianship if something happens to you. It is an uncomfortable document to write and the most important one you will sign. A solo parent without a named guardian leaves a decision to a court that could have been made by you.

The question people ask

Whether a child needs two parents. The research on children of solo mothers by choice is more reassuring than the cultural assumption — outcomes track resources, stability and support, not the number of adults in the house. What children appear to need is not a second parent. It is a parent who is not alone.
